Amazon has acquired a four-year-old startup based in India. Perpule helps brick-and-mortar stores establish e-commerce operations. According to a regulatory filing, Amazon paid almost $15 million for Perpule.
It's the latest move in retailers' race to win a place in the world's second most populous nation, a country where brick-and-mortar still accounts for more than 95% of sales.
The company’s push into physical retail comes as Flipkart, and Reliance Jio Platforms (backed by Facebook and Google), which last year raised over $20 billion, also race to capture this market.
