Despite the impending holiday, Best Buy is testing a new store format in four locations. The goal is to find out whether remodeling stores to include fewer products and less shoppable area and to make more room for fulfillment of online orders is a good use of the space.
Ship from store gained a great deal of popularity during the pandemic, but it is more expensive than pickup and can involve modifying stores to accommodate it. Best Buy CEO Corie Barry voiced her sense of urgency in exploring the fulfillment option through the four-store test.
"Normally, we would not remodel any stores this close to the holiday season, but we feel it’s imperative to move quickly to gain the learnings about how the store format may complement our omnichannel strategy," Barry said.
