Costco is reinstating its free food samples. Target is once more accepting returns. Some Kroger locations are returning to normal store hours. As states and cities ease restrictions, retailers are taking steps to resume normal operations. But some labor groups and worker safety experts are raising concerns. They say it may be too early to do away with safety measures designed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
"The threat of this virus is real across every grocery store in America," said Marc Perrone, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers union. The union says at least 68 of its grocery workers have died from the coronavirus.
