As Dick's Sporting Goods backs away from the hunting category, it has set its sights on a niche current CEO Ed Stack feels holds real opportunity: the outdoors. Dick's new store concept Public Lands will open in two locations, Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio, in 2021. The emphasis on outdoor activities such as kayaking, camping, biking, hiking, and fishing is reflected in the name, as is the retailer's mission to protect the nation's public lands. Stack is stepping down as CEO in February, but in his role of chief merchant he will devote most of his time to the new venture.
Speaking on the chain’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO Ed Stack told analysts that the new concept had been in the works prior to the pandemic, but that it is even “more timely” now.
