Last week, Amazon filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The aim of the suit was to prevent the New York attorney general from filing her own lawsuit against Amazon over the company's working conditions during the pandemic. At the time, James said she would consider her legal options. Now, she is filing the lawsuit Amazon sought to prevent.
In her complaint, James alleged that Amazon's coronavirus safety measures were inadequate, endangering employees. Furthermore, she claimed that Amazon acted illegally when the company fired or otherwise disciplined two workers who spoke out about warehouse working conditions.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel told the Washington Post in an emailed statement: “We care deeply about the health and safety of our employees, as demonstrated in our filing last week, and we don’t believe the Attorney General’s filing presents an accurate picture of Amazon’s industry-leading response to the pandemic.”
