The retail wars have long been waged on more than one front, but the coronavirus pandemic made the digital battleground more important than ever. In that respect, Walmart-owned Sam's Club is finally beating its rival Costco, at least according to one metric. App intelligence firm Apptopia reported that the Sam's Club app was downloaded 9.6 million times, almost twice as many times as the Costco app was downloaded. Costco is still beating Sam's Club on sales, but the app-related victory indicates that Sam's has an important edge.
The research outlet attributed Sam's Club's digital victory to the app's recent updates that have created a "more pandemic-friendly shopping experience" with features like "Scan & Go," which allows shoppers to scan items on their own in the store.
