Walmart and Microsoft made headlines recently by partnering on a bid for TikTok, but they were not the only interested parties. Now, TikTok owner ByteDance has chosen Oracle over Microsoft and Walmart – but not for a sale. While President Trump told the Chinese social networking platform to orchestrate a sale or else risk being shut down for national security reasons in the United States, the result of all the negotiations seems to be little more than a business partnership between TikTok and Oracle. The nature of the deal and the structure of the partnership are still not clear. However, Walmart says it is still interested in TikTok, even if an acquisition is off the table.
Walmart on Sunday told CNN Business that it "continues to have an interest in a TikTok investment and continues discussions with ByteDance leadership and other interested parties."
