To cope with the deluge of online orders retailers are expecting, Walmart plans to add 42 e-commerce fulfillment pop-ups to existing distribution centers. Normally, these distribution centers would be supplying products to stores, but with the addition of e-commerce pop-ups, they will be fulfilling online orders as well. Walmart expects these pop-ups to handle as much as 30% of its holiday orders. The retailer is also hiring 20,000 new associates for its e-commerce operations.
"It is a seamless merge of stores and e-commerce, so our buildings can do either one," said Srini Venkatesan, executive vice president for Walmart told the Wall Street Journal.
